Challenges in Mining the Last Satoshi
In a thought-provoking analysis, Bitcoin enthusiast Luke Broyles has remarked on the monumental challenges awaiting the mining of the last Satoshi, the tiniest fraction of Bitcoin. He posits that the energy expenditure necessary to mine this final Bitcoin will far exceed the total energy used to extract the first 20 million Bitcoins. Broyles anticipates that the energy required for mining this last coin could stretch beyond the first third of the 22nd century, showcasing the extreme difficulties embedded within Bitcoin’s design.

Bitcoin Halving Events and Supply Limit
Every four years, the Bitcoin network undergoes a halving event where mining rewards are halved, consequently making the mining process increasingly resource-intensive. Currently, the Bitcoin reward stands at 3.125 BTC following the latest halving, with the next event set to reduce it further to 1.5625 BTC.
The hard cap on Bitcoin’s total supply is 21 million coins, of which 19.85 million have already been mined, leaving around 1.15 million Bitcoins yet to be uncovered. Due to the halving mechanism, the extraction of these remaining Bitcoins will require years, with the final coin not expected to be mined until approximately 2140.
The Future of Bitcoin Mining
Once mining concludes, no additional Bitcoins will enter the market, compelling miners to rely solely on transaction fees to validate transactions and support the Bitcoin blockchain. As of the time of this report, Bitcoin was listed at $94,181, having seen its value peak at $109,114 back in January.
