Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings

The Tokyo-based investment firm Metaplanet has significantly bolstered its Bitcoin assets by acquiring an additional $129 million worth of the cryptocurrency, surpassing the total Bitcoin reserves of El Salvador. With this latest capital infusion, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings now total 6,796 Bitcoin, valued approximately at $707 million, outpacing El Salvador, which holds 6,714 Bitcoin worth around $642 million.

This notable achievement was highlighted by CEO Simon Gerovich on X, where he noted, “From humble beginnings to rivaling nation-states, we’re just getting started.”

Recent Acquisition Details

The firm executed its most recent acquisition on May 12, purchasing 1,241 Bitcoin at a maximum price of 14.8 million yen ($101,843) per coin. This purchase marks the firm’s highest recorded buying price to date.

Metaplanet initiated its blockchain investment strategy in April 2024 and has shown a pronounced escalation in its accumulation efforts, with several significant purchases preceding this one. Just on May 7, the company secured 5,555 Bitcoin and engaged in a series of transactions in March and April that collectively brought its holdings up by nearly 40,000 Bitcoin.

Performance and Positioning

In terms of performance, Metaplanet recently reported a Bitcoin yield of 38% for the current quarter, indicating strong positive momentum for its investments. Comparatively, the firm achieved an impressive 95.6% yield during the first quarter of 2025.

Given its aggressive purchasing strategy, Metaplanet has emerged as Asia’s largest Bitcoin holder and holds the tenth position globally according to BiTBO.

Broader Market Context

Interestingly, amidst this backdrop, Michael Saylor, the head of another crypto firm known as Strategy, suggested that more Bitcoin purchases might be on the horizon. On May 12, he posted an image of the “Saylor Tracker,” which monitors his firm’s Bitcoin holdings, implying that further additions could potentially occur. As it stands, Strategy holds an extensive inventory of 555,450 Bitcoin, valued around $57.8 billion, reinforcing the growing presence of institutional players in the cryptocurrency landscape.
