Security Alert Regarding Zoom
In light of a recent alarming incident, Jake Gallen, the CEO of Emblem Vault, has alerted users about potential security risks while using the popular video conferencing platform, Zoom. Gallen, who is also known for his work as a podcaster and an NFT enthusiast, fell prey to a clever cyber attack perpetrated by an individual operating under the alias “ELUSIVE COMET”.
This breach resulted in the loss of digital assets valued at over $100,000, including cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether.
The Attack
The attack unfolded on April 11, when Gallen’s entire computer system was compromised, allowing the attacker to drain his cryptocurrency wallets. This process began during a Zoom call, where the malware responsible for the breach, referred to as “GOOPDATE”, was installed while Gallen was engaged in an interview with a well-known figure from YouTube, whose identity remained concealed by a turned-off camera.
Collaborating with Cybersecurity Experts
Gallen is currently working with cybersecurity experts at The Security Alliance (SEAL) to mitigate the ongoing threat posed by the elusive hacker, known for employing sophisticated social engineering techniques to trick victims into downloading harmful software. SEAL’s research has revealed that Zoom’s default settings permit users to request remote access during meetings — a feature that can create vulnerabilities if precautions are not taken.
Leonidas, another NFT collector, has corroborated these findings and advised crypto users to disable remote access to enhance security.
Consequences of the Breach
Further complicating matters, Gallen’s Ledger wallet was also breached, highlighting concerns over even securely maintained passwords. The hackers reportedly infiltrated his X account, targeting other individuals through direct messages under the guise of legitimacy. SEAL has linked the hacker to a fictitious venture capital entity named Aureon Capital, suggesting that the perpetrator has conned millions from various victims under this false pretense.
As an additional precaution, those who have had interactions with Aureon Capital are encouraged to reach out to SEAL through their emergency Telegram hotline for support.
Staying Vigilant
These alarming events underline the imperative for users, especially within the cryptocurrency domain, to adopt stricter security protocols and remain vigilant against potential threats in digital communications. Despite efforts to solicit a response from Zoom regarding this incident, the company has yet to address the situation publicly.
