Canary Capital Proposes PEPE Spot ETF
Canary Capital has officially submitted a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the establishment of a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) dedicated to the trending meme cryptocurrency, PEPE. The application, categorized as Form S-1, outlines the CANARY PEPE ETF’s strategy to monitor the market price of PEPE while securing the actual tokens with a third-party custodian. Furthermore, to facilitate transaction processing on the Ethereum blockchain, the ETF plans to allocate up to 5% of its total assets in Ether.
Understanding PEPE
For those unacquainted with PEPE, it is a digital currency inspired by the beloved character Pepe the Frog, originally created by cartoonist Matt Furie. In 2024, PEPE saw an explosive rise in popularity and has established itself as a favorite among investors engaging in speculative trading.
The token boasts a significant online community and has garnered endorsements from notable investors, including Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, who has vocalized support for its investment potential. Presently, however, PEPE trades at a level considerably lower than its peak price. Data from Etherscan reveals that more than 250,000 unique wallets currently hold PEPE; however, a substantial portion of the coin’s supply is dominated by a few large accounts, commonly referred to as “whales”.
Risks and Market Potential
In its SEC filing, Canary Capital cautions that the distribution of PEPE is uneven, emphasizing that as of January 2026, the top ten wallets collectively owned around 41% of the total circulating supply of the coin, indicating potential risks associated with this concentration.
Introducing a PEPE ETF could rejuvenate interest and liquidity for the token in the near term, though it remains uncertain if institutional investors—the primary focus for ETFs—will maintain their interest in it moving forward. Currently, the only other meme coin with a dedicated spot ETF is Dogecoin, which saw its Grayscale Dogecoin Trust launched in November, albeit with unimpressive initial performance.
Canary Capital’s Investment Strategy
This PEPE ETF proposal reflects Canary Capital’s efforts to diversify its investment products, which already include funds focused on various altcoins like Solana, XRP, and Litecoin.
