Coinbase Introduces Leveraged Cryptocurrency Derivatives Trading

On Wednesday, Coinbase unveiled a significant addition to its Base App: the ability for users to engage in leveraged cryptocurrency derivatives trading. This feature allows eligible users to trade perpetual futures with leverage up to 50 times, facilitated by the protocol Hyperliquid. With this integration, traders have access to over 290 markets for perpetual futures, featuring popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as markets linked to stocks and commodities.

Importance of Perpetual Futures

Chintan Turakhia, Coinbase’s Head of Engineering, elaborated on the importance of this feature during an interview with Decrypt, stating that perpetuals, or ‘perps,’ represent about 75% of current crypto trading volumes.

“Perps are the single most requested feature among our most engaged users,”

Turakhia noted. These derivatives enable traders to speculate on price movements of assets without the necessity of ownership, and unlike standard futures, they do not have an expiration date. By employing leverage, traders can control larger positions than their capital would typically allow, albeit with increased risks of both gains and losses.

Trading Operations and Risks

The perpetual futures trading on the Base App operates 24/7, supporting a broad range of trading pairs that include not only major cryptocurrencies but also tokenized stocks and commodities. However, it’s crucial for users to understand that if losses surpass a defined threshold, their positions are subject to liquidation. Although these trades are performed within the Base App environment, execution is managed by Hyperliquid, which is recognized for its high performance in on-chain perpetual protocols. Turakhia highlighted that the integration allows users to benefit from Hyperliquid’s liquidity and speed while using their existing wallets.

Regulatory Limitations and Strategic Shift

Coinbase has made it clear that this new perpetual futures offering is not accessible in certain regions, including the United States, Canada, and the UK, where regulations limit the availability of leveraged crypto derivatives. This launch adds to a range of trading functionalities within the Base App, building on the platform’s rebranding a year ago as a multifaceted app that integrates crypto trading with various social features, messaging capabilities, AI tools, and monetization options for creators.

However, after a year of operation, there have been significant shifts in strategy. Jesse Pollak, the creator of Base, acknowledged a reorientation after reflecting on the underwhelming response to their social and creator coin initiatives, indicating that the future focus will be on prediction markets, perpetuals, stablecoins, trading, payments, and AI agents—highlighting a pivot in their strategic direction.
