Political Action Committee Targets Congressman Al Green

A political action committee (PAC) that supports cryptocurrency initiatives has made headlines by announcing a substantial investment aimed at defeating Congressman Al Green in the upcoming Texas Democratic primary. The PAC, named Protect Progress and affiliated with Fairshake, has pledged to allocate $1.5 million toward advertising and outreach efforts against Green, primarily due to his voting history that many in the crypto community find unfavorable.

Congressman Green’s Opposition to Cryptocurrency Legislation

With deep ties to the House Financial Services Committee, where he has served since 2005, Green has consistently opposed key legislation pertaining to the cryptocurrency sector. Protect Progress specifically highlighted his rejection of critical measures like the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act and the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, as well as his endorsement of the SEC’s Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, which creates obstacles for banks engaging with digital assets.

“Green’s actions are hindering American technological advancement in the financial arena,”

said Josh Vlasto, a spokesperson for Fairshake.

The PAC’s aggressive financial strategy underscores a burgeoning trend where crypto-centric groups aim to exert influence over the political landscape, especially as the 2026 election cycle approaches.

Green’s Concerns About Cryptocurrencies

Green, who has cast doubt on the viability and safety of cryptocurrencies, expressed concerns regarding their potential threat to the U.S. dollar’s international standing and raised alarms about the possible economic and environmental repercussions of the digital assets. He previously dismissed allegations that regulatory bodies were discouraging banks from partnering with cryptocurrency firms as unfounded.

Upcoming Primary and Support for Menefee

As Green navigates a newly restructured congressional district, he is now facing off against Democratic candidate Christian Menefee, who has garnered positive feedback from cryptocurrency advocates. Earlier this year, Fairshake revealed it held around $193 million in cash reserves following significant contributions from industry giants such as Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz, marking a strategic push from the crypto sector to support lawmakers who align with their interests.
