Concerns Over Spam Transactions

CZ, the former CEO of Binance, has called out Etherscan for its handling of spam transactions linked to address poisoning scams. He criticized the leading block explorer for not adequately filtering out these malicious transfers, which contribute to user wallets being bombarded with zero-value transactions. In contrast, he noted that TrustWallet already has measures in place to prevent such spam.

Recent User Experiences

The issue came to light particularly after a user named Nima reported receiving a staggering 89 phishing emails in less than half an hour, following two stablecoin transfers on the Ethereum network. This attack is designed to exploit users by persuading them to use counterfeit addresses that mimic genuine ones found in their transaction history when they send cryptocurrencies.

Nima cautioned that many users risk falling prey to these attacks, which exploit the automatic approval of zero-value transactions, making it easy for attackers to flood the transaction histories with fake entries.

While Etherscan typically does hide zero-value transfers by default, other explorers like BscScan and Basescan require users to manually select an option to conceal these spam transactions, leaving some individuals vulnerable to these scams. CZ suggested that with the increasing sophistication of these scams, there could be a future role for AI in distinguishing between genuine transfers and spurious ones.

Risks Beyond Address Poisoning

Beyond address poisoning, Dr. Favezy highlighted that other risks exist with token swaps, which could potentially destabilize the market. A recent incident involving a wallet that reportedly lost $50 million in a swap raised alarms about the integrity of routing and liquidity source selection in these transactions.

Favezy expressed hope that AI will enable better trade routing and optimal liquidity decisions in the future, minimizing the risks faced by users.

The Urgent Need for Effective Spam Filtering

In an environment where attackers can launch automated campaigns targeting numerous wallets concurrently whenever stablecoin activity is detected, the need for effective spam filtering on block explorers is becoming increasingly urgent.
