Changpeng Zhao, often referred to as CZ and the head of Binance, has alerted the cryptocurrency community about the increasing prevalence of phishing attacks. In a recent message shared on social media platform X, he emphasized that no reputable customer support team would ever request a user’s password.
Risks of Phishing Attacks
Zhao highlighted the dangers associated with opening links found in unexpected emails, which often lead to counterfeit login pages aimed at stealing sensitive information such as passwords.
Recommended Security Practices
To mitigate such risks, CZ recommended that crypto users navigate directly to a platform’s website by typing the address themselves, ensuring they verify the URL for authenticity. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of maintaining good password practices, advising against using the same password on multiple sites, which can leave users vulnerable.
He shared essential security measures to avoid falling victim to phishing scams:
- Always refrain from sharing your password with purported “Helpdesk Agents,” as genuine support staff will never require this information.
- Avoid clicking on any links sent via email; instead, access your account by entering the URL manually or using a bookmark. Verify URLs meticulously.
Additionally, Zhao encouraged the use of password managers to create and safely store complex, unique passwords, as these tools typically do not automatically fill in information on fraudulent websites, enhancing user security.
He also urged users to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) using hardware devices like YubiKeys, which authenticate users on legitimate platforms and effectively thwart phishing attempts. CZ pointed out that hardware-based 2FA is superior to SMS-based options, which can be susceptible to interception.
