Vitalik Buterin at the 2025 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival
During the 2025 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival, Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, took center stage at the ETHAsia 2025 event to deliver a significant keynote address entitled ‘The Future of Ethereum L1.’ In this talk, he examined the future prospects for scaling Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1) network, shedding light on innovative pathways for its development.
Innovative Pathways for Ethereum’s Development
Buterin indicated that the technologies designed for Layer 2 (L2) solutions, which have been successful in enhancing scalability, could also be relevant to L1’s evolution. He elaborated on the possibility of applying L2 principles, such as the imbalance between transaction production and verification, to optimize L1 operations.
Pivotal Functions of Layer 2
He proposed that L2 could serve pivotal functions, including managing large-scale data operations that go beyond the current limitations of native data availability (DA). Furthermore, he discussed how L2 could improve transaction processing speed and security against maximal extractable value (MEV) exploits, along with fostering a variety of virtual machine (VM) configurations.
Transformative Nature of Ethereum’s Layers
This discourse not only underlined the transformative nature of Ethereum’s layers but also pondered the future merging of advancements from L2 into L1, which could significantly boost the network’s efficiency and functionality as a whole.
