Upcoming Ethereum Upgrade: Fusaka Hard Fork

The Ethereum network is poised for a significant upgrade next week, with the Fusaka hard fork scheduled to launch on December 3. This expected change aims to enhance the capacity for data handling, particularly concerning the technology known as blobs, which are crucial for managing data in Ethereum’s Layer 1 and Layer 2 architectures. Currently, Ethereum handles a maximum of six blobs per block, a limitation that cryptocurrency analyst Anthony Sassano highlights as the network nearing its capability.

New Features and Improvements

Fusaka will introduce a feature called Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), which serves to simplify data access for nodes on Ethereum’s ecosystem. This technique allows nodes to confirm the availability of data without needing to store the entire blockchain, thereby improving efficiency and reducing network congestion. The scaling of blob limits will occur incrementally to prevent potential system overload.

Future Developments

Following the Fusaka upgrade, planned for December 3, further developments will occur, with the first fundraising event scheduled for December 9. Notably, a subsequent fork referred to as the Blob Parameter Only (BPO) will be implemented on January 7, increasing the maximum blobs per block to a total of 14, marking an enterprise-level increase of over 133% compared to the current specifications.

Community Expectations

The Ethereum community anticipates that the improvements from the Fusaka rollout, along with future BPO updates in 2026 and the accompanying enhancement of a gas limit by 200%, will drive broader adoption of EVM Layer 2 solutions. In late 2026, these updates will be complemented by the major Gloas-Amsterdam upgrade, which will implement 25 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and aims to halve the Ethereum block time, thereby allowing the system to process transactions even more rapidly.
