Former LAPD Officer Found Guilty in Violent Home Invasion
A former police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, Eric Halem, aged 38, has been found guilty in connection with a violent home invasion that resulted in the theft of $350,000 in cryptocurrency from a teenager. The incident, referred to as a “$5 wrench attack,” occurred in 2024, and a jury from the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled against Halem on charges of robbery and kidnapping.
Details of the Crime
In December 2024, authorities charged Halem with multiple offenses, including kidnapping for ransom and first-degree residential robbery. He and his accomplices unlawfully entered the victim’s high-rise apartment located in Koreatown, restrained both the 17-year-old victim and his girlfriend with handcuffs, and forcefully accessed the victim’s cryptocurrency account.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office indicated that serious consequences await Halem, as these offenses can lead to a life sentence in prison. During the trial, the victim, who testified under the name Daniel, revealed that he had acquired his cryptocurrency holdings through illicit means, laying bare the complexities surrounding the case.
Defense and Evidence
Halem’s defense attorney, Megan Maitia, attempted to downplay the situation by describing her client and his partners as “knuckleheads”. She raised questions by highlighting how they had arrived at the crime scene using highly conspicuous vehicles – one of which was a green Range Rover and another an orange Lamborghini Urus linked to Halem’s rental business.
Post-crime text messages between Halem and others suggested that he was monitoring police communications, indicating premeditation in the plot. Halem’s accomplices, who are yet to face trial, have maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings.
Rising Threats in Cryptocurrency
This case emerges as a stark representation of the dangers associated with what is commonly referred to as a “$5 wrench attack” — a term used to describe incidents where victims are threatened or physically harmed to surrender their cryptocurrency.
The increasing prevalence of such incidents is alarming; a report from blockchain security firm CertiK noted a staggering 75% rise in physical assaults on cryptocurrency holders in just one year. Reports of losses reached an estimated $40.9 million in 2025.
International Incidents and Security Measures
Notable cases involving crypto holders have gained international attention, such as the kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland in France, where attackers inflicted severe injuries and demanded an exorbitant ransom in cryptocurrency. Major incidents have also been reported in the UK, Israel, and Canada, highlighting a worrying trend in the financial safety of digital asset owners.
In response, security experts advise crypto investors to adopt protective measures such as utilizing multisig wallets, employing cryptographic techniques, and maintaining decoy wallets to mitigate risks associated with potential attacks.
