International Collaboration Against Cryptocurrency Fraud
A collaborative international effort is underway as law enforcement from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada unite to combat cryptocurrency fraud. Dubbed “Operation Atlantic,” this initiative aims to tackle the growing issue of “approval phishing” scams, often referred to as “pig butchering.” These deceitful schemes typically involve enticing victims into online romantic relationships, only for them to ultimately be manipulated into transferring their funds to fraudsters.
Key Insights from Law Enforcement Officials
Brent Daniels, Deputy Assistant Director of the U.S. Secret Service’s Office of Field Operations, highlighted the severity of these scams, which result in significant financial harm for countless victims annually. He stated,
“Approval phishing and investment scams cost victims millions in financial loss each year. During Operation Atlantic, we aim to identify and dismantle these scams swiftly, thwarting criminals from profiting further from their illicit activities.”
To achieve their goals, the U.S. Secret Service will collaborate closely with the U.K. National Crime Agency, the Ontario Provincial Police, and various private-sector entities. Paul Foster, Deputy Director of Cyber at the National Crime Agency, emphasized the need for a united response to the borderless nature of these crimes.
“Operation Atlantic is designed to safeguard the public by providing timely warnings and helping secure their assets, enhancing our robust partnerships across borders,”
he stated.
Future Initiatives and Projections
This initiative comes on the heels of Canada’s launch of “Operation Atlas,” which is set to commence in 2024. Jennifer Spurrell, director of the Financial Crimes Services Bureau at the Ontario Provincial Police, remarked on the importance of coordinated efforts, asserting that the lessons learned from “Project Atlas” will further enhance their approach in real-time fraud prevention.
The prevalence of pig butchering scams has escalated since 2020; projections indicate that more than $17 billion may be lost to crypto-related crimes by 2025, according to Chainalysis, a firm specializing in blockchain data. Operation Atlantic represents yet another step by law enforcement agencies to mitigate these staggering losses. In November, the U.S. Department of Justice also initiated a dedicated Scam Center Strike Force aimed at dismantling international pig butchering schemes linked to Chinese criminal networks.
