Grayscale’s Recent Updates on XRP Trust ETF

In a recent filing with the SEC dated October 5, Grayscale has announced significant updates regarding its XRP Trust ETF, which trades as GXRP on NYSE Arca. One of the main highlights is the introduction of Anchorage Digital as an additional custody provider for a portion of the ETF’s XRP holdings.

While Coinbase Custody continues to serve as the primary custodian, this move aims to enhance the trust’s risk management strategy amid its expansion. The arrangement with Anchorage was formalized on September 29, though the exact amount of XRP to be held by Anchorage has yet to be disclosed.

Operational Changes in the GXRP ETF

The filing also unveiled a transformative operational change: the GXRP ETF can now facilitate in-kind transactions. This allows authorized participants to directly exchange XRP for ETF shares, a shift from the previous requirement of cash transactions.

This mechanism enables the direct transfer of assets, potentially streamlining the creation and redemption processes of the ETF, thereby reducing the necessity for market transactions during regular operations. Previously, the fund’s structure mandated cash contributions from authorized participants to acquire XRP assets.

Security and Custody Standards

Maintaining security standards, Anchorage is required to keep the private keys for its XRP assets primarily in cold storage, although a limited amount of hot wallet access is permissible for essential operations like settling transactions related to share issuance and redemptions.

This enhanced custody arrangement follows an uptick in institutional interest for XRP ETFs, with U.S. funds reportedly holding about 1.13 billion XRP, representing an estimated value of $1.68 billion as of the end of September.

Industry Trends and Conclusion

The expanded custodial framework is aligned with a broader trend in the industry; for instance, the existing 21Shares XRP ETF leverages multiple custody providers like Coinbase, BitGo, and Anchorage. Overall, Grayscale’s recent changes reflect an ongoing evolution in crypto asset management and a commitment to adapting to market demands.
