The indictment against Okhotnikov, known in some circles as Lado, accuses him along with four other Russian co-founders of a decentralized finance (DeFi) investment platform called Forsage. If convicted, they could face up to two decades behind bars. According to Special Agent Ivan J. Arvelo of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York, the accused are alleged to have exploited modern technology and confusing jargon to mislead investors, running a scheme reminiscent of classic Ponzi operations.

In 2022, this case escalated further when Okhotnikov was one of 11 individuals charged by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for orchestrating a scheme that promised profits through recruitment of new investors. Despite these serious allegations, Okhotnikov has consistently maintained his innocence. He has expressed concerns over the impact of the headlines surrounding his indictment, claiming they have caused damage to his reputation beyond mere headlines, and argued that the SEC’s case against him should be dismissed.
