MetaMask Launches Debit Card in the U.S.

MetaMask has officially launched its debit card for users throughout the United States, marking a significant expansion from its previous limited pilot program in the UK and European Union that began in 2024. This innovative card, developed through a partnership with Ethereum software company Consensys and Mastercard, enables users to make everyday transactions directly from their cryptocurrency balances.

Key Features and Benefits

Ale Machado, the Product Manager at MetaMask, explained to Decrypt that the card allows users to retain full control of their assets until the moment they make a purchase. This emphasizes a key principle of cryptocurrency: never relinquishing funds until necessary, providing security against potential losses.

For crypto users, especially those holding stablecoins, this development offers practical functionality without compromising the fundamental values of crypto ownership.

Premium Options and Rewards

In addition to the standard MetaMask card, the company has introduced a premium option for $199 per year, which is the MetaMask Metal Card. This upgraded version boasts an impressive 3% cashback on the first $10,000 spent each year, compared to the 1% offered by the standard card. Machado noted that the Metal Card is designed for users eager for a superior experience, which includes:

  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Heightened spending capabilities
  • Greater ATM withdrawal limits
  • Exclusive discounts with travel partners like Entravel

Joining the MetaMask Card Program

To join the MetaMask Card program, users are required to complete identity verification and compliance checks. This launch is part of a broader series of enhancements by MetaMask, including the introduction of mUSD, their Ethereum-backed stablecoin, and a cashback reward token released last year in collaboration with Stripe. The popular wallet has also announced plans for its own native token and launched a $30 million rewards initiative ahead of the token’s release.

Future Aspirations

The firm is aiming for the card to become an integral element of its users’ everyday activities. Machado highlighted that initial pilots demonstrated users began to treat the MetaMask Card like any other debit card they carry, which is the intended outcome.

“Within six months, we aspire for our U.S. users to use the MetaMask Card seamlessly, without actively considering the cryptocurrency backing it,”

Machado commented, envisioning a future where transactions are effortless.
