The University of Namibia Launches Master’s Program in Blockchain Technology
The University of Namibia (UNAM) has initiated a groundbreaking Master’s program in blockchain technology, aiming to signify Namibia as a central hub for blockchain innovation and research across the African continent. In collaboration with the Africa Blockchain Institute (ABI), UNAM has received formal approval for its Master of Science in Blockchain Technology, a program that reflects its strategic goal of fostering local expertise in the rapidly evolving field of blockchain.
Integration of Blockchain in Education
This initiative is a continuation of UNAM’s proactive approach to incorporating cutting-edge technologies into its educational framework. Over the past several years, particularly since 2022, the university has been integrating blockchain-related topics across various disciplines under the guidance of senior officials like Samuel Nuugulu, the head of the IT department. This academic infusion is aimed at nurturing local startups and equipping students with the necessary skills to contribute to national progress.
Market Demand and Program Development
The rising public and private sector interest in blockchain applications, alongside proposals for a potential digital currency by the central bank, has created a fertile environment for this new master’s program. The partnership with ABI is a crucial step toward leveraging institutional expertise, enabling the launch of a focused initiative in blockchain education.
According to a report from Techcabal, the curriculum for this program is thoughtfully designed to combine theoretical learning with hands-on experiences, covering essential topics such as blockchain architecture, smart contracts, cybersecurity measures, decentralized systems, and governance frameworks.

Kayode Babarinde, the Executive Director of ABI, articulated the program’s overarching aim to address the knowledge deficit hindering Africa’s engagement in the global blockchain marketplace.
