Residents Take Legal Action Against Bitcoin Mining Operation
Residents in Granbury, Texas, have taken legal action against MARA Holdings, asserting that the company’s Bitcoin mining operation is a major source of noise pollution that disrupts their lives and jeopardizes their health. Filed on Friday in the Northern District of Texas, this lawsuit seeks over $1 million in damages and includes a request for a jury trial, as initially reported by Blockspace.
Claims of Noise Pollution and Health Issues
The plaintiffs, who represent various families living as close as 0.01 miles from the mining facility, claim that the ongoing operation of cooling systems produces noise levels that invade their homes, impacting their quality of life and devaluing their properties. They have indicated that conditions have significantly deteriorated following MARA’s assumption of control over the facility in 2024.
In their complaint, the residents describe being unable to open windows or enjoy outdoor spaces due to the persistent noise and vibrations, which they argue constitute a private nuisance.
Specifically, the lawsuit highlights health repercussions among the residents, including insomnia, headaches, tinnitus, anxiety, and overall fatigue. Some have reported even more severe issues such as hearing loss and hypertension. Additionally, residents noted unusual changes in wildlife behavior and a decrease in livestock activity that they attribute to the mining facility’s operations.
MARA Holdings’ Response
In a statement released in March 2024, MARA Holdings acknowledged community concerns and pledged to address them by aiming to be a considerate member of the Granbury community. They stated that they are actively engaging with locals and seeking input on their data center’s developments.
The company announced plans to mitigate sound levels through various measures, including the construction of sound barriers and transitions to liquid immersion cooling systems. However, complaints from residents suggest these efforts have not been effective.
Legal Accusations and Broader Implications
The lawsuit accuses MARA of negligence in managing the facility’s environmental impact and includes claims for intentional infliction of emotional distress and restitution, among others. Amidst a surge in Bitcoin mining operations blending into the realms of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, legal challenges like this are becoming increasingly common across the United States.
In particular, large data centers—many of which generate high electricity demands and strain local resources—are facing heightened scrutiny and opposition. In a notable legal response, Maine recently enacted a moratorium on new large-scale AI data centers due to concerns regarding their community impacts. The reactions and measures being taken at local levels are indicative of growing tensions surrounding the rapid expansion of data-intensive operations and their implications for surrounding neighborhoods.
