In a breakthrough for e-commerce on the Ethereum blockchain, autonomous agents—intelligent programs capable of conducting transactions independently—are set to revolutionize digital interactions. This transformation is made possible by the reintroduction of a largely neglected HTTP standard, specifically the 30-year-old HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status, along with Ethereum Improvement Proposal 3009.

Potential of Autonomous Agents

On Wednesday, the Ethereum Foundation highlighted the potential of these advancements in a guest post by Coinbase developers Kevin Leffew and Lincoln Murr. They suggested that these autonomous agents could emerge as Ethereum’s most significant users, significantly enhancing the blockchain’s capacity for automated transactions.

Already, Coinbase has adopted the new HTTP 402 protocol through what is referred to as the “x402 payments protocol”, as noted on their GitHub page. The implications of this change could be profound; it allows AI agents to secure funds and make autonomous payments for various services, effectively minimizing the necessity for human oversight in the entire process of managing Application Programming Interface (API) calls, data storage, or computational tasks.

Applications and Functionality

The potential applications are vast, from enabling self-driving taxis to autonomously cover their operational costs, to AI systems producing content on demand without human intervention, and applications utilizing stablecoins to store data indefinitely. Currently, limited iterations of AI agents are already active in the cryptocurrency market, processing market data, executing buy and sell orders, and optimizing investment portfolios in real-time.

Leffew and Murr articulated the functionality of autonomous agents by likening their operation to a vending machine. An AI agent can send an HTTP 402 request, sign a transaction, and complete the payment process to receive the requested service, thereby transforming the API into a service that is aware of its own wallet. They noted, “This is akin to one round trip similar to how a vending machine works, eliminating the need for account setups.”

Ethereum’s Unique Position

According to Leffew and Murr, Ethereum is best positioned to implement the HTTP 402 standard, highlighting its trustless settlement capability that streamlines processes around invoices and dispute chargebacks compared to conventional methods. They emphasize the demands of atomic payments, programmable policies, and composable wallets, all of which are well-supported by Ethereum and stablecoins.

Ongoing Development

Furthermore, development efforts are already underway using HTTP 402, as mentioned by the Coinbase developers. For instance, Hyperbolic Labs is incorporating this standard into its language models, while Prodia Labs utilizes it for creating images and video content. The developers concluded by stating, “The true power of x402 lies in the fact that agents can not only facilitate payments; they can also autonomously integrate a series of services into comprehensive economic cycles.”
