Ripple’s Strategic Expansion into Africa

In a bold move to enhance cryptocurrency adoption, Ripple, a blockchain company headquartered in San Francisco, has set its sights on Africa, a region witnessing an extraordinary surge in crypto usage. Announcing its strategic expansion on April 7, Ripple highlighted the impressive growth of over 52% year-over-year in on-chain activity across Sub-Saharan Africa, spurred by developing regulatory frameworks in progressive nations such as South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Mauritius.

Growth in On-Chain Activity

The firm’s recent analysis indicates that these leading crypto-friendly countries accounted for more than $205 billion in on-chain activity from July 2024 to June 2025, reflecting a burgeoning embrace of digital assets. Regulatory authorities in these African nations are actively working to establish clearer guidelines around cryptocurrencies, aiming to bolster anti-money laundering (AML) measures, protect consumers, and stimulate innovation within the sector.

Africa’s Digital Asset Moment

Ripple has recognized this moment as “Africa’s digital asset moment,” crediting the continent’s rich history of financial technology (fintech) innovation as a crucial element in building a robust infrastructure for blockchain technologies.

As a response to the rising demand for digital payment solutions, Ripple is doubling down on its commitment to support Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

Promoting Ripple USD

A key component of Ripple’s strategy involves promoting its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), which is designed to facilitate compliant and stable transactions for businesses and institutions in the region. To further this goal, Ripple has expanded collaborations with various fintech platforms within Africa, including Chipper Cash, VALR, and Yellow Card. Through these partnerships, Ripple aims to enhance institutional access to cryptocurrencies and blockchain payment systems, particularly leveraging the advantages of RLUSD.

Engagement with Mercy Corps Ventures

Additionally, Ripple is engaging with Mercy Corps Ventures on projects aimed at improving the efficiency and transparency of aid distribution using blockchain technology in Kenya. This initiative highlights Ripple’s broader ambition to integrate blockchain solutions into essential services, positioning itself as a key player in the continent’s digital transformation.
