Secret Network’s Transition to Arbitrum

Secret Network is contemplating a significant transition from its current base on the Cosmos blockchain to Arbitrum, driven mainly by concerns over security vulnerabilities and inadequate liquidity. This strategic shift aims to develop a new ERC-20 version of the SCRT token on Arbitrum, with a snapshot scheduled for September 1.

Eligibility for Migration

According to a governance announcement made on July 7, only certain SCRT holdings will be eligible for migration—specifically, staked and native SCRT are included, whereas sSCRT, bridged SCRT, and assets held in contracts or through Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) will not qualify.

Security Concerns and Recent Breaches

The proposal, which has yet to be approved by community vote, comes on the heels of a security breach involving the Axelar-Secret IBC bridge. This exploit, which resulted in the loss of approximately $4.7 million worth of assets, prompted Axelar to disable specific bridge pathways connected to Secret Network.

Although the native SCRT token and its associated privacy features remained unaffected, the incident highlighted ongoing risks associated with outdated bridge architecture and insufficiently maintained code, especially given the increasing sophistication of AI tools that can identify vulnerabilities in smart contracts.

Current State of the Cosmos Ecosystem

Originally, in 2020, Secret Network found its niche within Cosmos due to the ecosystem’s dynamic development facilitated by appchains and robust infrastructure. However, recent developments paint a different picture, according to the network’s team. They note that liquidity is dwindling, and a reduced number of significant projects are building within Cosmos.

Anoma co-founder Christopher Goes also raised alarms back in January about the stress faced by the Cosmos ecosystem, with various projects like Penumbra, Osmosis, and Noble scaling back operations, potentially marking a trend towards exodus or resource reallocation.

Comparative Data and Future Plans

Current data from DeFi platforms shows that Secret Network’s total value locked (TVL) stands at around $1.32 million, while the broader Cosmos ecosystem boasts nearly $2 billion. In contrast, Arbitrum One dominates as the leading Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution, with a total secured value of roughly $17.4 billion.

Should the community endorse the migration, SCRT Labs intends to terminate official assistance for the Cosmos-based version of Secret L1 on the designated date. While the legacy chain may still operate if sufficient validators remain, its longevity would rely heavily on external support.

As part of the transition, the code for Secret will be made available under an open-source license, and there are plans to adjust the inflation rate of SCRT from 9% to 5%. As SCRT is poised to remain the governance token throughout this process, users are encouraged to convert their eligible holdings back to native or staked SCRT and return IBC assets to their original chains before the snapshot takes place.

Market Reactions

Market reactions to the proposed migration have not been encouraging. Data from CoinGecko indicates a sharp decline in SCRT’s market value, trading at approximately $0.041, reflecting a 25% drop in one day and more than a staggering 99% decrease since its peak in 2021.
