Security Incident in the Shiba Inu Community

Recent news from the Shiba Inu community raises serious concerns following a security incident involving Trust Wallet, a well-known multi-chain self-custody wallet. The breach, which resulted in losses amounting to $7 million, specifically impacted a version of its web browser extension, version 2.68.

Warning from Susbarium Shibarium Trustwatch

In response to this alarming development, the Susbarium Shibarium Trustwatch account, dedicated to safeguarding Shiba Inu enthusiasts from scams, has issued a warning. The message from Susbarium highlighted the security vulnerability of the Trust Wallet extension, urging users who still have version 2.68 to deactivate it immediately and upgrade to version 2.69, which is available on the official Chrome Web Store. Thankfully, mobile users and those operating different versions of the extension are not affected by this issue.

Previous Alerts and Ongoing Scams

This cautionary alert follows an earlier advisory from Susbarium this December, which alerted users to potential scams targeting members of the Shiba Inu community. Scammers were reportedly posing as legitimate tech leads and moderators on platforms such as Discord and Telegram, manipulating users into connecting to fraudulent sites through false warnings about “wallet bugs.”

Trust Wallet’s Response

Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the co-founder of Binance, verified the losses stemming from the Trust Wallet breach, which Trust Wallet corroborated, stating its commitment to repay those affected. The wallet service has since informed users that it is working diligently to refund the victims of this incident and will maintain direct communication with them as updates unfold.

Advice for Users

Furthermore, Trust Wallet has cautioned its users to be vigilant against impostors and refrain from interacting with unsolicited messages outside of official communication channels. The company has observed a rise in scams circulating through Telegram advertisements and fake compensation requests, which underscore the importance of users verifying links and protecting their sensitive information, including recovery phrases. Trust Wallet emphasizes that interactions should be restricted to its verified platforms to avoid falling victim to cyber fraud.
