Shiba Inu Ecosystem Update
In a significant development for the Shiba Inu ecosystem, the Shibarium team has reinstated the Plasma Bridge for the BONE token, just weeks following a major security breach that resulted in the theft of over $4.1 million. The restoration of the bridge comes after a thorough evaluation and the implementation of improved security measures designed to protect users and assets.
Enhanced Security Features
According to a recent blog post by the Shiba Inu team, the updated Plasma Bridge not only re-establishes connectivity for BONE transactions between Ethereum and Shibarium but now features a proactive blacklisting mechanism intended to enhance the platform’s security against potential threats. The announcement emphasized the importance of this enhancement:
“We’re pleased to share that the Plasma Bridge is back online for BONE, offering a safer and more resilient experience.”
This newly integrated blacklisting system enables the platform to identify and block potentially suspicious addresses in real-time, thereby enhancing the safety of transactions through the bridge. Additionally, Shibarium has set up a 7-day delay on all BONE withdrawals from the Plasma Bridge. This delay acts as a precautionary measure that allows operators and security personnel the necessary time to monitor for any irregular activity before finalizing withdrawals, effectively providing an extra layer of defense without hindering user access.
Background on the Security Incident
The September 2025 security incident saw a hacker exploit vulnerabilities within the Shibarium Bridge, leading to the unauthorized acquisition of 4.6 million BONE tokens and other assets worth approximately $4.1 million. The attack utilized a flash loan technique that enabled the perpetrator to gain control over validator signing keys and consequently, the majority validator authority. The stolen assets included a staggering $1 million worth of Ether, $1.3 million in Shiba Inu tokens (SHIB), and over $717,000 in KNINE.
The swift actions of the Shiba Inu developers were critical in preventing additional losses after the breach, culminating in the successful reactivation of the Plasma Bridge with an emphasis on fortified security to safeguard the community moving forward.
