Rise in Kidnapping Incidents Linked to Cryptocurrency in France
Recent reports indicate a troubling rise in kidnapping incidents connected to cryptocurrency in France, with investigators revealing that many of these crimes are orchestrated by international networks. According to information reviewed by the French outlet Franceinfo, a confidential document from the Organized Crime Information, Intelligence and Strategic Analysis Service of the Judicial Police (SIRASCO) noted that over 40 cases tied to cryptocurrencies have been recorded in the country since July 2023 and are expected to continue into late 2025.
Modus Operandi of Kidnappers
The kidnappings often involve a collaboration between foreign organizers and local recruiters who find individuals with criminal backgrounds to execute these operations. Typically, the targets are young men aged 20 to 35 who are engaged in the cryptocurrency market as investors, business owners, or social media influencers.
The perpetrators often exploit the victims’ online presence, where they display luxurious lifestyles, to monitor their activities and those of their relatives, making them more vulnerable to such schemes.
Concerns and Recommendations
As the crypto landscape continues to expand, authorities are increasingly concerned about the criminal exploitation of individuals within this sector, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and security measures among potential targets.
