At ETHPrague on May 28, Aya Miyaguchi, president of the Ethereum Foundation, engaged in a compelling conversation with Christopher Fabian, the founder of Giga and a prominent figure within UNICEF’s innovation unit. This hesitation, according to Fabian, has continued to hinder government entities from embracing blockchain solutions fully. He illustrated the utility of cryptocurrencies through relatable analogies, likening them to motorcycles that ferry vital supplies like vaccines to remote locations, depicting crypto as an innovative medium for financial transactions. He explained that understanding blockchain required a paradigm shift, analogizing it to convincing an outdated system—represented by rigid organizations—to adapt and evolve organically.

Miyaguchi shared her initial encounter with Fabian in Osaka during DevCon, where she recognized his deep insight into the cryptocurrency field and its potential benefits for humanitarian work. The partnership culminated in the launch of UNICEF’s CryptoFund in October 2019, marking a watershed moment as the UN’s first foray into receiving, holding, and distributing cryptocurrency. The initial funding supported eight emerging tech enterprises with 125 ETH. Since then, UNICEF’s CryptoFund has expanded its scope, contributing to transformative projects, including Fabian’s Giga initiative aimed at connecting underserved communities with the internet.
