The Vancouver Canucks Social Media Security Breach
The Vancouver Canucks, the NHL team based in Canada, recently found themselves at the center of a social media security breach. Initially, their official account on X (formerly Twitter) promoted a new cryptocurrency token, $Canucks, claiming to be the first of its kind launched by an NHL team.
Official Response
However, the club soon issued a statement advising fans to ignore any recent messages as they were working with the platform and the league to handle a security incident.
Details of the Breach
The unauthorized promotional content, which has since been removed, showcased details about a pre-sale for the $Canucks token on the Solana blockchain, stating it was capped at 1000 SOL and that all proceeds would support a Liquidity Pool. This bizarre occurrence included a deepfake video featuring Elon Musk, who was depicted offering a $20 million cryptocurrency giveaway.
The video led viewers to a fraudulent website, reportedly linked to Russian sources, and was posted just hours before the Canucks’ NHL Draft Lottery.
While the hackers managed to sneak in replies to users questioning the legitimacy of the posts, the Canucks’ official PR team quickly warned fans about the compromised account, confirming to the public that they were indeed victims of a hack.
Historical Context
This incident echoes a previous attack on former Canucks goalie Eddie Lack, who also had his account taken over in a crypto scam.
Looking Forward
As the situation develops, the team is taking steps to restore their official communication channels and ensure the safety of their online presence, reiterating the importance of vigilance against digital threats in the sports world.
