Details of the Scam

The criminal cleverly used Wells Fargo’s name in the caller ID to gain Sroufe’s trust and claimed that there were suspicious activities linked to his account. Believing he was acting in his best interest, Sroufe cooperated with the caller’s directives to safeguard his funds.

The scammer led him to believe that immediate actions were necessary, suggesting that money was being transferred to platforms like Cash App and referencing Bitcoin—which triggered suspicions in Sroufe.

Aftermath and Response

Upon reviewing his banking app, Sroufe was dismayed to find that his account had been completely emptied. He later acknowledged that he had missed an email from Wells Fargo alerting him to unusual account activity, a detail that added to his distress. In response, he promptly notified the bank’s fraud department, resulting in the immediate closure of his account.

Sroufe went on to submit a reimbursement claim to the bank, which, disturbingly, was denied. In a letter received from Wells Fargo, the bank stated their investigation uncovered “no evidence of fraud.” Sroufe vehemently disagrees with this assessment, arguing,

“Authorization through deception is not consent. And that’s what I kept telling them.”
