Visa Partners with Mesh for Cryptocurrency Payments
In a significant move for cryptocurrency adoption, Visa has announced a collaboration with Mesh, a provider of crypto payment infrastructure. This partnership aims to allow customers to utilize their cryptocurrency and stablecoin holdings directly at over 175 million merchant locations globally, eliminating the need for prior transfers to bank accounts or loading separate payment cards.
Integration of Digital Wallets
On October 19, Mesh revealed that this agreement would link various digital wallets and cryptocurrency platforms to Visa’s vast payment network. By leveraging Mesh’s transaction processing capabilities, users will be able to make purchases straight from their existing balances at physical and online stores in more than 200 countries and territories where Visa operates.
Notably, Mesh will facilitate the currency conversion and transaction handling, while merchants can receive payments through their existing payment systems without needing to alter their current infrastructure. This means that, although consumers will spend their digital assets, merchants will not directly receive cryptocurrency; instead, Mesh will ensure that the funds are converted into the established fiat currencies before transactions are completed.
Transaction Volume and Future Plans
According to Visa’s report, the company processed a staggering $14.2 trillion in payment volume during fiscal year 2025. However, specifics regarding the launch timeline for this innovative service, as well as details on which cryptocurrency wallets will be included at inception, remain undisclosed.
The framework of this collaboration allows selected wallet providers to enable direct payments using digital asset balances, streamlining the purchasing process without necessitating withdrawals. Essentially, a Visa credential operates in the background to facilitate payments, which users can complete using conventional contactless terminals or directly via supported applications. Mesh will take charge of the funding and conversion whenever a transaction occurs, tapping into either supported cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, or fiat currencies.
Shifting the Cryptocurrency Landscape
This initiative diverges from traditional cryptocurrency card programs, where users often had to convert their digital assets into fiat or rely on designated cards connected to specific wallets. Previous integrations had typically demanded pre-conversion of cryptocurrencies before spending. For example, Visa’s partnership with Mercuryo allowed users to convert cryptocurrency into fiat for quick transfers to Visa cards, establishing a clearer path for consumers to access their funds.
The collaboration with Mesh is part of Visa’s broader strategy to enhance the integration of cryptocurrencies into its existing payment systems. Recent reports highlighted that Visa was involved with over 160 stablecoin card programs globally as of September 2026, with payment volumes in these categories surging nearly 200% year-over-year. This growth underscores a rising consumer interest in stablecoin transactions.
Addressing the ‘Last-Mile Problem’
Bam Azizi, CEO and co-founder of Mesh, identified a prevalent issue in the crypto space, referring to it as a ‘last-mile problem’ when it comes to spending digital assets. Azizi emphasized that this latest infrastructure will ensure seamless funding and conversion at the point of purchase, allowing users to shop without the tedious step of transferring funds between accounts first.
Future of Fintech and Cryptocurrency Adoption
The fintech landscape is witnessing rapid evolvement with Mesh’s continuous efforts to onboard various financial platforms and exchanges into its network, as it aims to enhance user experiences across payments. Following a Series C funding round that raised $75 million earlier in the year, Mesh has continued to accelerate its pursuit of partnerships within the crypto payment sector. Their partnerships already include prominent entities such as Bybit and Paxos, further solidifying the infrastructure needed for broad cryptocurrency adoption.
Moreover, while the projected number of global cryptocurrency owners soared to approximately 774 million by mid-2026, transactional activity within traditional payment frameworks remains relatively limited, measured at around $1.5 billion monthly toward late 2025. This new partnership with Mesh is poised to not only simplify access but potentially revolutionize how cryptocurrencies are utilized in everyday transactions.
