Introduction of Digital Asset Custody Service

Absa Corporate and Investment Banking has introduced a digital asset custody service tailored for institutional clients in South Africa, leveraging technology from Ripple. This innovative service provides a regulated framework for safeguarding cryptocurrency assets and managing private keys with the backing of a prominent African financial institution.

Significance of the Service

Absa aims to establish a secure and compliant environment for institutional digital assets via its Digital Asset Custody platform, integrating traditional financial standards related to governance, compliance, recoverability, and approvals. This approach contrasts with presenting cryptocurrency custody as a segregated, loosely monitored service.

The launch of this service is particularly significant, considering that from July 2024 to June 2025, Sub-Saharan Africa witnessed an influx of over $205 billion in on-chain cryptocurrency transactions, a remarkable increase of approximately 52% from the prior year, as reported by Chainalysis.

Key Features of the Custody Platform

Absa emphasizes that its custody platform is not merely another digital wallet; instead, it includes advanced protections for private keys and authorizations, which are secured within specialized hardware and utilize deterministic key derivation methods, avoiding static private key storage. Moreover, recoverability and institutional approval mechanisms are central features of this new offering.

Challenges in Digital Asset Management

Robyn Lawson, Absa’s Head of Digital Product for Custody, highlights that the main challenge for many organizations isn’t merely acquiring digital assets but rather establishing clear control over them, defining access governance, and addressing potential scenarios involving key loss or compromise.

Lawson notes that institutional ownership discussions are evolving from simply questioning “who holds the keys?” to a deeper examination of how those keys are managed.

Ripple’s Role in the Initiative

Additionally, it’s essential to note Ripple’s role in this initiative. The partnership with Absa was first announced in October 2025, marking the bank as Ripple’s inaugural major custody collaborator in Africa. Ripple has since been enhancing its custody capabilities in conjunction with other services such as payment systems, RLUSD, and tokenization.

This development underscores Ripple’s business model expansion beyond XRP, highlighting custody as an evolving revenue stream for institutional clients.
