Crackdown on Cryptocurrency Fraud
In a significant crackdown on fraudulent activities in the cryptocurrency space, authorities in Brooklyn, New York, in collaboration with the FBI, have mounted a successful operation against a network believed to be behind multiple scams targeting Russian-speaking individuals in the United States. Announced on Wednesday, the operation took place last week and resulted in an impressive seizure of 112 servers and the closure of 241 websites associated with the scams.
Details of the Operation
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, these illicit activities have swindled victims out of tens of millions of dollars through complex investment schemes. Notably, no arrests were made during this operation. Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn District Attorney, highlighted the cunning tactics utilized by these criminals, who not only defrauded victims initially but then attempted to con them again with deceitful offers to recover their lost funds. He commended the efforts of the Virtual Currency Unit within his office and the FBI for their diligent work in unraveling the network’s operation.
The seizure of these servers played a crucial role in hindering the scammers’ future operations by preventing them from launching new websites or making contact with previously targeted victims.
Leading the investigation, Assistant District Attorney Alona Katz remarked that the backend operations are effectively neutralized.
Trends in Cryptocurrency Scams
This operation occurs against the backdrop of a troubling trend in the United States, where cryptocurrency-related scams have surged significantly. In 2025, losses attributed to cryptocurrency fraud reached a staggering $11.4 billion, marking a 22% rise from the previous year, per FBI statistics.
The increasing frequency and sophistication of such scams underscore the ongoing challenges that regulators and law enforcement face in protecting consumers within the rapidly evolving digital currency landscape.
