Base Activates Cobalt Upgrade

In a significant advancement for on-chain finance, Base has completed the activation of its Cobalt upgrade, introducing enhanced features for trading and issuer compliance. This marks the third major update for the Ethereum layer-2 network, designed to facilitate the management of tokenized assets.

Enhanced Compliance Features

Cobalt, which expands Base’s B20 token standard, now enables issuers to implement a range of compliance measures for their tokens. These measures might include:

  • Identity verification for recipients
  • Confirmation of accredited investor status
  • Checks against sanctions lists

Furthermore, issuers can manage corporate actions like stock splits by adjusting share quantities reflected in user wallets without the need for minting or burning tokens, or changing the underlying balance.

Token Transfer Management

An additional feature allows issuers to designate approved administrators who can transfer tokens from a holder’s wallet without needing explicit permission, along with the option to attach a memo to such transfers. However, Base emphasizes that it does not have the authority to initiate these transactions itself; the decision lies entirely with the issuers.

Bridging Traditional Finance and Decentralization

This upgrade is crucial as it equips issuers with the necessary tools to bridge traditional financial products into the decentralized space. Cobalt also introduces Validity Transactions, which empower traders to set conditions for their transactions that must be met before they’re executed. For instance, a trader could execute a swap that would only be processed if a certain asset price is achieved within a designated block timeframe. Submitted transactions can remain confidential until they are officially recorded on the blockchain.

Future Developments

The Cobalt upgrade builds upon Base’s evolving focus on tokenized finance. Following recent announcements, including the introduction of B20 as a standard for stablecoins and real-world asset tokens on July 8, there have been increased efforts toward expanding its offerings in trading and financial transactions. Base’s creator, Jesse Pollak, acknowledged earlier in July that the platform had underestimated the demand for trading applications and expressed commitment to refocusing on the financial sector to establish Base as a premier blockchain for global finance.

The B20 token standard has already seen practical applications, like the launch of tokenized US stocks by Coinbase on August 25, which included shares from major companies such as Apple and Nvidia. Looking ahead, Base plans to enhance its platform by reducing block processing times from two seconds to just 200 milliseconds, adding support for transaction fees management, and adopting several technical enhancements from Ethereum’s upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade.
