Florida Resident Admits Guilt in Cryptocurrency Fraud
In a significant legal development, a Florida resident dubbed “Bitcoin Rodney” has admitted guilt in a federal court in Baltimore concerning his involvement in a massive cryptocurrency fraud scheme totaling an estimated $1.8 billion. Rodney Burton, a 56-year-old from Miami who also maintains a residence in Prince George’s County, Maryland, acknowledged his role in promoting HyperFund—a platform that prosecutors allege was part of an extensive money laundering operation aimed at defrauding global investors.
Details of the Fraud Scheme
Court records reveal that between June 2020 and January 2022, Burton participated in a conspiracy to offer unlicensed money transmission services to further the aims of HyperFund. This cryptocurrency platform touted itself as a legitimate investment opportunity, enticing potential backers with promises of daily returns ranging from 0.5% to 1% on paid “memberships” until their initial investments reportedly doubled or tripled.
HyperFund claimed that its allegedly generous payouts were generated through revenues from large-scale cryptocurrency mining operations, which prosecutors argue never existed. By 2021, the organization began to halt investor withdrawals entirely, leading to suspicions about its legitimacy.
Burton’s Role and Financial Gains
Burton is believed to have managed a network of companies that falsely claimed to offer consulting services while actually serving as unlicensed channels for transferring investor cash through the fraudulent scheme. Prosecutors assert that he personally gained over $7.8 million from his illicit activities, with a portion of those profits coming from victims based in Maryland.
Legal Consequences and Sentencing
Burton faces a potential prison sentence of up to five years for his conspiracy charge, with sentencing scheduled for July 23 before U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett. This case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina A. Hoffman, underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement to scrutinize cryptocurrency enterprises that allegedly exploit the excitement surrounding digital currencies to mask fraudulent operations.
Burton’s Public Persona
As highlighted in a report by Rolling Stone, Burton, who has promoted his identity in the crypto sector, garnered attention by associating with numerous celebrities, including actor Jamie Foxx and rapper Rick Ross.
He also hosted a crypto conference in Miami in 2021, which featured well-known figures such as Draymond Green from “Shark Tank,” “Wolf of Wall Street” author Jordan Belfort, singer Akon, and comedian Tiffany Haddish, further cementing his presence in the crypto community.
