California Man Repeatedly Falls Victim to Cryptophishing Romance Scams, Losing Life Savings Twice
A California retiree lost $500,000 to a pig butchering scam and fell for a similar scam again, highlighting the persistent risk of online fraud.

Online Romance Scam Victim
A retiree from California has become a victim of a notorious online romance scam known as "pig butchering," losing his life savings of $500,000 in the process. Shockingly, he has fallen for a similar scheme yet again. Adan Look, who previously worked as a gardener for San Francisco, started communicating with a new romantic interest shortly after recovering from the financial devastation caused by the first scam, according to a report by ABC7 News.
First Scam: The Deception of "Annie"
In the initial incident, Look was duped by a woman named "Annie," whom he met on Facebook. Annie claimed to have earned millions through cryptocurrency investments and convinced him that they could create a beautiful life together, which included a dream home in Hawaii. In his belief, Look transferred large sums of money to banks in Asia, only to realize later that both the investment opportunity and Annie were fraudulent.
Second Scam: Encounter with "Vicky"
Following this, Look encountered another scam when he began chatting with a new individual, "Vicky," who posed as a combat medic in the Army stationed in Kuwait. Vicky soon requested financial help. Although Bank of America flagged his account and halted three attempts to send $2,000 as directed by Vicky, Look went ahead and sent $1,000 via Zelle and another $1,000 through Apple gift cards.
Vicky then told him that she needed around $45,000 to bribe her commander to facilitate her discharge. Jonathan Look, Adan’s son, expressed his concern, revealing that his father was trying to gather the funds and was at risk of losing his home. He described how he had to intervene by contacting the loan officer because his father was already preapproved for a $500,000 mortgage.
Family's Struggle and Investigation
Family members are often helpless in these situations due to legal restrictions preventing them from acting without the victim's consent. After conducting a reverse image search on one of the photos Vicky sent, ABC7 discovered it was linked to a profile on an adult dating site featuring a different name. The Army confirmed to the news outlet that they were very confident that the soldier Look believed he was communicating with did not exist.
Reflections and Future Risks
Reflecting on his experiences, Look remarked, "I’m a target. That’s what I see." Although he has cut off communication with Vicky, a new potential romance with another online contact, "Suzy," has begun, despite his belief in her authenticity.
