A Polish national, identified as Romana Ż., faces serious indictments from prosecutors related to her involvement in the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange. Allegations include participation in an organized criminal operation and the misappropriation of funds amounting to approximately 7.8 million zlotys, or $2.1 million, that belonged to users of the platform.
Legal Proceedings and Arrest
The investigation, which has drawn significant attention, has led prosecutors to request that the Katowice-Wschód District Court place Romana Ż. in pretrial custody due to worries that she might flee or disrupt ongoing inquiry efforts. After being detained on September 5, Romana Ż. was interrogated by investigators and has since denied any wrongdoing, according to statements from the National Prosecutor’s Office of Poland.
Details of the Allegations
The allegations against her detail that she, along with accomplices, manipulated computer records and obstructed the proper processing of transaction data in a bid to misappropriate user funds that had been committed to Zondacrypto. This legal action comes on the heels of prior arrests made on September 2, where three other individuals were also charged with various offenses, including money laundering and participation in organized crime. A Polish court subsequently ordered their pretrial detention for a period not exceeding three months.
Escalating Concerns Surrounding Zondacrypto
The concerns surrounding Zondacrypto have escalated, with prosecutors projecting that losses associated with the exchange may exceed a staggering 350 million zlotys. Notably, the inquiry has expanded to encompass the unresolved case of Sylwester Suszek, the founder of the now-defunct BitBay — which underwent a rebranding to become Zondacrypto — who mysteriously disappeared in 2022.
Bankruptcy of BB Trade Estonia
Additionally, Zondacrypto’s Estonian operator, BB Trade Estonia, has declared bankruptcy, with the initial meeting with creditors arranged for September 17. This ongoing situation highlights the increasing scrutiny on cryptocurrency exchanges and the potential for systemic risks within this burgeoning financial sector.
