The local sheriff’s office has revealed that an elderly victim aged 84 was duped into parting with $420,000 after being deceived by individuals posing as representatives from Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission. These impersonators persuaded the victim to purchase gold, framing it as a safeguard for their finances.

In another case, a report detailed how a 64-year-old resident fell prey to a cryptocurrency scam, losing $200,000 after downloading a fraudulent app disguised as a rescue tool, believing it was affiliated with Coinbase. Similarly, a phishing email led another individual to lose $50,000 by compromising their financial accounts. Lastly, a victim was swindled out of $3,500 through Apple’s gift cards, having been approached by a scammer impersonating legitimate Microsoft technical support.

Authorities’ Warning

In light of these alarming incidents, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is sounding the alarm for residents to remain vigilant.

“These scams utilize advanced tactics to instill fear and urgency in victims, prompting impulsive actions without adequate reflection,”

a spokesperson stated.
