Coinbase Expands Cryptocurrency Accessibility
In a significant move for cryptocurrency accessibility, Coinbase has announced strategic alliances with major banking institutions including PNC, JPMorgan Chase, and Citi. These partnerships aim to enhance services related to Bitcoin trading, account funding, and stablecoin transactions.
PNC’s Bitcoin Service Launch
A highlight of this initiative is PNC’s recent launch of a Bitcoin service, which allows qualified private banking clients to buy, sell, and securely hold Bitcoin directly through its digital banking platform. This service, made available starting December 9, 2025, leverages Coinbase’s robust Crypto-as-a-Service technology.
PNC’s new offering is designed specifically for its elite clientele, which includes affluent individuals, families, and business leaders. The bank has positioned this addition as a groundbreaking step in its “crypto for clients” initiative, emphasizing the integration of trading, custody, and financing functionalities provided by Coinbase. William Demchak, PNC’s Chairman and CEO, noted that this service allows clients to engage in Bitcoin transactions in a secure environment that meets PNC’s high standards.
Looking towards the future, PNC hinted that enhancements and broader access to these services would be rolled out in subsequent phases. This launch follows an earlier partnership formed in July 2025, where PNC agreed to offer select banking services to Coinbase.
JPMorgan Chase and Citi Collaborations
JPMorgan Chase, which also formed a partnership with Coinbase in July 2025, has outlined plans for customers to utilize Coinbase in several ways, effectively reaching a customer base of over 80 million. Key features include funding Coinbase accounts via Chase credit cards—a service expected to commence in 2026—alongside the integration of Chase bank accounts with Coinbase for straightforward crypto purchases. Customers can anticipate a seamless connection facilitated through an API as Coinbase and Chase work together to enable these features.
In September 2026, Citi unveiled an exciting chapter in its collaboration with Coinbase, introducing two business payment solutions supported by Citi’s banking framework. One notable feature is the Citi Virtual Account Wallet, empowering clients to accept, hold, and transact funds, with traditional currencies automatically converted into stablecoins. Additionally, Coinbase is integrating its payment infrastructure with Citi’s Spring merchant payment platform, streamlining stablecoin acceptance for institutional clients.
Expanding Digital Asset Services
In a related development, Coinbase announced a separate initiative on September 16 to extend digital asset services to over 3,000 regional and community banks across the U.S., utilizing its partnership with Stablecore. This approach allows these institutions to use Coinbase’s technology while maintaining their branding and customer relationships.
JPMorgan has not only focused on partnering with Coinbase but has also explored developing its own blockchain-based payment solutions, as seen with the JPM Coin Ethereum launch, which facilitates dollar transfers for approved institutional clients.
Regulatory Guidance and Compliance
Moreover, U.S. regulatory guidance has recently permitted banks to leverage external service providers for cryptocurrency-related activities, ensuring compliance and security in executing transactions. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has clarified the scope of which services can be outsourced, reinforcing the legitimacy of cryptocurrency custody and trading activities when managed under stringent third-party risk protocols.
