Trader Raises Alarms Over High-Risk Wallet Due to HTX Repayment
A trader utilizing Hyperliquid has raised alarms after their wallet was marked as high risk due to a repayment linked to the cryptocurrency exchange HTX, formerly known as Huobi. This situation underscores the implications of sanctions screening for users who might not have directly engaged with a sanctioned service.
Incident Overview
The issue came to light on October 25, when the trader, identified as x256.hl on social media platform X, mentioned that they had lent a friend a considerable sum of money several months ago. The repayment process involved funds from HTX, which the trader was unaware of at the time, stating:
“I’ve never used Huobi myself, and he had no idea the exchange had any sanctions issues either.”
The user expressed concern that if they received small transfers from HTX, their Hyperliquid wallets could also come under scrutiny. Their post elicited reactions from others who shared similar experiences after interacting with HTX, prompting further discussion about the potential long-term ramifications for traders.
Impact on Other Users
One user referenced a prior incident where three wallets were blocked from Hyperliquid’s main platform due to transactions with HTX, detailing that two wallets were flagged on June 2 and the third on June 5. These wallets constituted a staggering 99.5% of the user’s total assets, built up over time across various decentralized finance protocols. The reported trading activity for these wallets included over $210 million in total volume, alongside more than $60,000 in trading fees and $50,000 in builder fees.
While this trader managed to access Hyperliquid via alternative routes, they noted that the inability to use the official interface could impede their ability to fulfill terms necessary for claiming future airdrops. Notably, they highlighted issues with claiming rewards from Kinetiq Season 2, despite being among the top 150 participants, due to their transaction involving HTX occurring prior to the final data collection snapshot.
Sanctions and Regulatory Implications
The implications of HTX’s sanctions arose following the UK’s imposition of restrictions against Huobi Global S.A. on May 26. British officials accused the firm of facilitating financial services tied to entities linked to Russia, which resulted in asset freezes and a series of financial limitations. In response, HTX contended that the sanctions were improperly applied to their exchange, asserting that Huobi Global S.A. was a distinct legal entity. However, UK sanctions authorities later clarified that HTX was also subject to these restrictions based on ownership parameters.
The complications with HTX usage quickly propagated to other trading platforms, with FixedFloat temporarily halting transactions involving Huobi-related funds for further verification. Concurrently, significant exchanges like Kraken and OKX alerted their users about possible scrutiny following transfers to and from HTX, while Binance implemented transaction limits as a precautionary measure.
Inconsistencies in Screening Protocols
Conversations with compliance experts indicated that transaction data and risk profiles are provided by service agencies such as Chainalysis, yet individual platforms hold the authority to decide which wallets are subjected to restrictions. Despite being flagged on Hyperliquid, the impacted wallets of users had reportedly cleared checks on GoPlus Security and Blockaid, highlighting inconsistencies in the screening protocols. Similar cases have emerged, such as that of a user named Maxime, whose wallet was inadvertently restricted due to a minimal transfer originating from a flagged address, albeit they were later able to regain access.
Current Status and User Concerns
Presently, Hyperliquid has not issued a public comment elucidating the responsible transaction or the screening criteria that led to the wallet flags, leaving many users in the dark about the potential risks of engaging with HTX or other similar exchanges. In response to earlier reported issues, some traders reached out through Discord support channels; however, their requests remained unresolved at the time of these findings.
