Core DAO Announces Leadership Changes
In a significant shift towards decentralization, Core DAO, which focuses on Bitcoin blockchain development, has announced that two of its notable contributors, Rich Rines and Brendon Sedo, are stepping down from their roles. This decision, revealed on October 27 via a social media post, is aligned with the organization’s strategy to empower independent validators and community members as part of its evolving governance model.
Decentralization Journey
Since the commencement of its decentralization journey, Core DAO has been transitioning its block production responsibilities away from its internal framework to independent operators, achieving uninterrupted network functionality during this phase. With these changes, the DAO is set to grant increasing control over ecosystem growth and strategic decision-making to community participants.
Reflections from Leadership
Rich Rines, who has been a prominent figure in the project since its inception, emphasized that this transition aligns with the decentralizing values foundational to Core DAO. In his parting remarks, Rines expressed gratitude towards the community, stating:
“The validators, builders, partners, and Coretoshis who power Core are already leading the way… I’ll always be a Coretoshi, and I’m excited to see Core continue growing as a network built to scale Bitcoin and carry its decentralized ideals forward.”
Rines had previously made notable contributions at Coinbase before joining Core and played a crucial role in launching its mainnet in January 2023.
Brendon Sedo, another key player in Core DAO, co-founded business software firm Joist, later acquired by EverCommerce. Sedo was instrumental as the Head of Core Ventures, where he oversaw the allocation of $1 million to multiple Bitcoin DeFi initiatives by mid-2025.
Future Directions
Core DAO has yet to announce successors to Rines and Sedo or outline a specific plan for redistributing their responsibilities. However, as the network anticipates further involvement from independent operators, the collective aim remains to enhance transparency and community-driven initiatives.
The shift in leadership coincides with Core DAO’s ongoing effort to solidify its decentralized framework. In late September, the organization outlined a roadmap for transferring the last vestiges of block production from its centralized nodes, marking a pivotal moment in its decentralization journey. Throughout these developments, the network experienced no interruptions, underscoring the effective management of the transition thus far.
Community Concerns
Notably, Core DAO has previously navigated complexities around validator rewards, sparking an emergency hard fork to rectify a situation where a few validators received excess CORE tokens. This incident led to temporary restrictions on token transfer by major exchanges, though Core assured that user assets remained secure.
Despite the progress, not all community members are accepting the pace of change. The community account Corefrontline raised concerns about the legitimacy of the decentralization process, questioning the approach to CORE liquidity and the management of treasury tokens. Moreover, they highlighted unanswered issues stemming from past controversies, including a dispute with Maple Finance surrounding compliance with agreements related to Bitcoin yield partnerships.
Innovative Consensus Mechanism
Core DAO’s transition is underscored by its unique Satoshi Plus consensus mechanism, which integrates delegated proof of stake with Bitcoin mining, allowing for Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and facilitating noncustodial Bitcoin staking. The future trajectory appears to involve greater involvement from independent entities in shaping the network’s direction and operational accountability as it continues to evolve.
