Core Scientific, previously known for its Bitcoin mining operations, is pivoting towards establishing itself as a player in the artificial intelligence infrastructure sector. This transition gained momentum in the second quarter of 2026 as the company disclosed it has leased around 1.1 gigawatts in customer power capacity, forecasting potential revenue of over $24 billion stemming from various long-term contracts.

Financial Performance and Revenue Sources

The financial report released on July 28 highlighted a remarkable growth in the company’s colocation services, which have now become its primary revenue source. In this quarter alone, colocation services contributed $136.7 million to Core Scientific’s total earnings of $164.2 million, while its self-mining segment contributed a modest $21.5 million.

Notably, this projection of $24 billion in potential revenue does not guarantee immediate cash flow or profits, as it is based on contracts that may stretch up to 15 years. The company still faces substantial hurdles including developing the necessary infrastructure, maintaining operational efficiency, and fulfilling contractual obligations. Moreover, the transition is underpinned by substantial financial commitments and further accruing debt.

History and Recovery from Bankruptcy

The history of Core Scientific’s tumultuous journey began when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2022, largely due to plummeting Bitcoin prices and soaring electricity costs. At the time, the firm held merely $4 million in cash, despite having invested heavily in physical assets like mining facilities and utility power access, which could not generate sufficient income to cover immediate debts.

Since its emergence from bankruptcy in January 2024, Core Scientific has been on a recovery path, trimming its debt by approximately $400 million via converting some debt into equity. This restructuring enabled the retention of 724 megawatts of operational capacity across multiple states, facilitating a swifter pivot towards AI, as demand grew for data center locations equipped with reliable power and computational capabilities.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Prospects

The company’s realignment towards AI infrastructure was first marked by its partnership with CoreWeave, solidifying agreements in June 2024 that significantly bolstered contracted capacity and revenue projections. These contracts now stand at about $10.2 billion over their duration after expansions increased the contracted capacity from 200 megawatts to around 590 megawatts. In the first half of 2026, CoreWeave notably contributed $180.9 million towards Core Scientific’s capital expenditures.

In July 2026, Core Scientific announced an expansive partnership with AMD, initiating agreements covering approximately 530 megawatts across five sites, potentially yielding over $14 billion in contract revenue. If conditions are favorable, AMD has reservations that could push the collaboration to roughly 2.5 gigawatts of capacity. This agreement includes options for AMD to acquire shares at a preset price, thereby intertwining their interests further.

Challenges Ahead

Despite these strides, financial realities continue to challenge Core Scientific’s outcomes. The company recorded a net loss of about $1.16 billion in the second quarter and has ongoing concerns regarding cash flow and profitability, particularly as it generated only $21.5 million from self-mining while expressing that debts have escalated.

As the company realigns away from the volatility of crypto markets, its future hinges on successfully converting contracted energy into reliable, billable computing services. The pressing task remains to ensure operational efficiency while managing a growing debt load, creating a precarious balancing act moving forward. Core Scientific is now working to meet the demands outlined in their partnerships while navigating the intricate terrain of financial obligations as they further explore the AI infrastructure market.
