Changpeng Zhao’s Wealth Valuation Controversy
Changpeng Zhao, the founder and former CEO of Binance, has recently taken issue with Forbes’ valuation of his wealth, which estimates it at an astonishing $110 billion. This figure, if accurate, positions him higher than notable figures such as Bill Gates, making Zhao the 17th richest individual globally.
Questioning the Valuation
In a post shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, Zhao expressed skepticism about the calculations that led to such a valuation. He specifically questioned the credibility of a claim stating that his net worth had soared by $47 billion over the past year while cryptocurrency markets were experiencing a steep decline of more than 50%.
Binance’s Valuation Recovery
This remarkable increase in Zhao’s wealth has primarily been linked to the recovery of Binance’s valuation, where he reportedly still possesses around 90% ownership. According to various reports, the exchange is generating annual revenues of approximately $16 billion.
Disbelief Amidst Market Decline
However, Zhao was left puzzled by the idea of his finances increasing dramatically during a bear market in cryptocurrencies. To illustrate his disbelief, he quoted the inquiry,
“How is that last sentence possible?”
referencing the claim regarding his net worth’s spike amidst a downturn in market prices.
Support from the Crypto Community
In contrast, many other cryptocurrency entrepreneurs have witnessed their fortunes diminish in the same time frame. Support from fellow crypto enthusiasts was evident, as users on the platform highlighted Zhao’s previous statements dismissing such rankings, with one user pointing out Zhao’s consistent assertion that these billionaire estimates are more of an educated guess than factual data. Zhao acknowledged this sentiment, affirmatively responding to the user that they were correct in their assessment.
