Emirates Airlines Introduces Crypto Payment Solution

On July 28, Emirates Airlines introduced a new payment solution, allowing residents of the UAE to book flights using Crypto.com Pay. This feature is only accessible for bookings processed in UAE dirhams (AED) and requires users to have an active Crypto.com account. This launch marks the culmination of a partnership that was initially established in July 2025 when Emirates and Crypto.com signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the feasibility of this service, contingent on regulatory approval and technological readiness.

Payment Process and User Experience

With this new payment option, eligible users can find Crypto.com Pay listed among the checkout alternatives when their travel plans meet the specified residency and currency criteria. However, there has been no announcement regarding the acceptance of payments from customers outside of the UAE or for transactions in currencies other than AED.

The company has emphasized that while this integration facilitates a regulated means of payment through crypto, it does not imply that Emirates directly accepts specific cryptocurrencies. The details about which digital assets are supported, any associated fees, and the handling of exchange rates and refunds remain undisclosed in the launch announcement.

The process for making payments varies depending on the device used by the customer. For those using the Emirates mobile app, after selecting Crypto.com Pay, users will be redirected to the Crypto.com app to authorize the transaction before returning to the Emirates platform for their booking confirmation. Desktop users will select the Crypto.com Pay option, scan a QR code, and complete the transaction approval through the Crypto.com app as well.

Strategic Insights and Future Developments

Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, indicated that the introduction of this service caters to the preferences of a younger, tech-savvy demographic, though there were no specific insights shared regarding customer demand or projected transaction numbers at the time.

Crypto.com’s integration of Crypto.com Pay is facilitated by its Dubai-based entity, Foris DAX Middle East FZE, which operates under a Stored Value Facilities license issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. This license, granted in May, positions Crypto.com as the first virtual asset service provider in the UAE to hold such a permit. The Central Bank’s framework designates virtual-asset payment services as licensed financial operations, enforcing compliance with various regulations including customer due diligence and anti-money laundering regulations.

The collaboration between Emirates and Crypto.com supports broader initiatives like the Dubai Cashless Strategy, which aims for 90% cashless transactions across multiple sectors by the end of 2026. This aligns with agreements that Emirates and regional carrier flydubai made to promote digital payment adoption within the tourism industry.

Although this initiative progresses the relationship initiated in July 2025 towards practical implementation, precise details regarding the volume of transactions, customer engagement expectations, and financial terms have yet to be revealed. Eric Anziani, President and COO of Crypto.com, heralded the launch as a significant advancement for Crypto.com Pay. As developments unfold, future updates are anticipated regarding which assets will be accepted, the management of refunds, and whether the service will extend to other markets or currencies beyond AED.
