In preparation for the 2027 upgrade known as Hegotá, Ethereum developers are currently refining the scope of included proposals as they address significant topics like censorship resistance, account abstraction, privacy, gas pricing, and the economics of validators. As reported by Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter on August 16, developers are evaluating a total of 66 proposals, though it is crucial to clarify that this number does not indicate 66 officially sanctioned features for the upgrade.
Current Proposals and Features
At the moment, the official Meta EIP for Hegotá captures only FOCIL, a proposal for Fork Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, as the single scheduled feature, while Frame Transactions is under consideration and many others remain in preliminary stages.
Set to be undertaken after the Glamsterdam upgrade in late 2026, the Hegotá upgrade aims to enhance transaction inclusion and privacy, especially as large builders gain prominence in block production. FOCIL is designed to ensure that a select committee of validators creates transaction lists that builders must adhere to, effectively preventing the exclusion of eligible transactions—a measure aimed at bolstering censorship resistance.
Account Abstraction and Privacy Enhancements
The ambitions for account abstraction are also a pivotal topic within the upgrade discussions. EIP-8141, which proposes Frame Transactions, would introduce innovative ways to define transaction parameters, including alternative signature schemes and gas sponsorship opportunities. This proposal has been suggested by Wahrstätter to be included alongside FOCIL to help establish a robust native privacy framework.
Future Developments and Proposal Finalization
Meanwhile, the path forward for the Hegotá upgrade will be determined in the coming months through further developer calls, where the proposals will be assessed for feasibility and potential implementation. The various enhancements, including EIP-8250 and EIP-8272 aimed at addressing privacy and the safety of larger blocks, reflect a comprehensive agenda that seeks to fortify the Ethereum network.
An essential aspect of the upcoming calls involves finalizing the list of proposals by late August. Proposals without a dedicated champion may be discarded, while execution teams are expected to submit their ranked preferences by September 10. As the development process unfolds, FOCIL remains the only feature for Hegotá confirmed for scheduled inclusion, while other ambitious concepts like EIP-8198 and EIP-7716 continue to provoke debate without any guarantee of their adoption in the upgrade.
