Interactive Brokers Launches Ethereum Staking

Interactive Brokers, a leading brokerage firm with over $903 billion in client assets, has unveiled Ethereum staking for its customers in collaboration with Zerohash. This new feature allows users to earn rewards on their crypto assets while maintaining a comprehensive view of their trading activities, including stocks, options, and futures. The announcement was made on October 13, indicating that eligible clients can easily stake Ethereum through the IBKR platform, where they can also track their requests and overall activity.

Staking Process and Benefits

The staking service is powered by Zerohash, which manages the staking process. Clients can utilize the Client Portal’s Staking Dashboard to both initiate staking or unstaking requests and monitor their activity. Rewards accrued from staking will automatically enhance the staked crypto balance, providing clients with an opportunity for compounding benefits as long as the assets remain staked. Milan Galik, the company’s CEO, likened this staking initiative to the Stock Yield Enhancement Program offered by Interactive Brokers, where clients can earn extra income on the shares they hold.

Client Eligibility and Trading Options

As part of this service offering, only specific clients of Interactive Brokers LLC can stake Ethereum initially. U.S. investors using this platform are further aided by the Client Portal, ensuring a seamless management experience for their staking requests. The launch of Ethereum staking is accompanied by the ability to trade 20 different digital assets, including renowned cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin, among others. Additionally, Interactive Brokers supports stablecoin transactions and facilitates transfers to external crypto wallets.

Enhanced Features and Transfer Capabilities

Interactive Brokers serves a broad clientele, comprising over 5 million investors globally, and is recognized as a member of the S&P 500, which allows investors to gain exposure to its operations through various investment vehicles. Prior to rolling out the staking features, the brokerage had enhanced its platform by enabling customers to migrate current crypto holdings from external wallets directly into IBKR-linked accounts without necessitating the sale of assets.

This transfer capability was applicable to eligible clients of both Interactive Brokers LLC and Interactive Brokers U.K. Limited, including significant cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Furthermore, trading commissions for cryptocurrencies range from 0.12% to 0.18% of the transaction value, with a minimum fee of $1.75 per order, while the baseline pricing does not account for additional spreads or costs.

Future Developments and Innovations

In earlier financial innovations, Interactive Brokers introduced a service for customers to fund their accounts with stablecoins, as well as features for converting dollars into USDC or other stablecoin variants for withdrawals. The firm also supports various tokens through Zerohash and Paxos, with available services contingent on the customer’s geographical location.

Apart from these offerings, Zerohash, the trusted partner behind the staking service, is actively pursuing federal banking approval to establish a national trust bank in North Carolina, which coincides with its ongoing development in the cryptocurrency regulatory landscape. In recent months, Interactive Brokers has expanded its features, including the introduction of nano futures contracts for Bitcoin and Ethereum aimed at smaller trading increments, as well as a connected prediction-market interface for trading and price comparison across different platforms.

As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, Interactive Brokers appears committed to enhancing their offerings and fostering greater investment opportunities for their clients.
