HSBC's Stablecoin RedCoin Seen as a Hit, Attracts 50,000 Users Within Days of Launch
HSBC's new RedCoin stablecoin has swiftly gained 50,000 users in just over a week since launch, boosting digital payments in Hong Kong.

HSBC Launches RedCoin in Hong Kong
HSBC has made significant strides in enhancing its digital payment offerings in Hong Kong with the introduction of RedCoin, a stablecoin pegged to the Hong Kong dollar. Within just a week of its launch on October 23, RedCoin has already garnered a user base of 50,000, as disclosed by HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery during a panel at the Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2. The rapid uptake reflects the favorable regulatory landscape in the city, which has allowed the bank to successfully roll out this innovative product to its retail customers.
Features and Functionality of RedCoin
RedCoin, which is identified by the ticker RCHKD, was made available to users through HSBC’s existing payment platform, PayMe, which itself boasts over 3.3 million users. This stablecoin enables eligible PayMe users to conduct transactions with other users and shop at participating merchants, enhancing the overall functionality of the app.
A notable feature of RedCoin is the ease with which customers can set up a wallet. Users can activate it directly through the PayMe application without needing a separate bank account or maintaining a minimum balance, allowing for seamless financial interactions. The PayMe app supports payments to more than 100,000 merchants, integrating RedCoin into HSBC’s well-established retail payment ecosystem.
User Adoption and Future Plans
Elhedery expressed optimism regarding user adoption at the FinTech event, highlighting the bank's ambition to serve millions of customers in the future. He attributed the stablecoin's initial success to robust technology and a regulatory framework established by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).
However, HSBC has not released specifics on how many of the 50,000 users have engaged in transactions or their regularity of use with RedCoin.
The digital asset maintains a valuation of one Hong Kong dollar and users can redeem it for the equivalent fiat currency. As of November 2, HSBC reported that there are HK$87.75 million worth of RedCoins in circulation, alongside HK$88.75 million in cash reserves, which covers this amount. Additionally, the figures indicate that the supply of circulating tokens has grown by HK$6.75 million over the past week.
Technology and Regulatory Compliance
Importantly, RedCoin runs on a private blockchain framework that utilizes Hyperledger Besu technology, ensuring that transfers are confined to approved channels. In contrast to publicly traded stablecoins, RedCoin is embedded within HSBC's controlled payment processes.
Future Functionalities and Accessibility
In conjunction with the launch of RedCoin, HSBC has plans to broaden access to the stablecoin through its HSBC HK Mobile Banking app. Future functionalities are expected to include the capability for customers to invest in tokenized financial products, such as money-market funds, utilizing RedCoin.
While Elhedery confirmed that merchant payments and wallet top-ups are operational, a clear timeline for making RedCoin widely accessible to all HSBC and Hang Seng Bank customers has yet to be announced. This initiative operates within the framework of Hong Kong's stablecoin licensing regulations that were established in August 2025.
