Investigation Unveils Fraud Linked to Tronify.rent

A recent investigation by JP, the founder of IOC Investigations, has unveiled a troubling case of fraud linked to the crypto platform Tronify.rent. This site reportedly scammed approximately 80 individuals out of $69,651 during the month of September. A concerning element of this case involves Google’s AI service, Gemini, which was allegedly used to assure potential victims of the website’s legitimacy.

Gemini’s Role in the Scam

According to JP’s findings published on October 4, users had interacted with Gemini, seeking confirmation about the safety of Tronify.rent. Disturbingly, reviewers allege that Gemini provided a seemingly affirmative response, which led victims to trust the website. The report documented 12 TRON addresses believed to be tied to this fraudulent activity, highlighting how the scam operated.

Claims and User Experiences

Tronify.rent advertises itself as a service that allows users to rent TRON energy, claiming to facilitate lower transaction costs for transferring assets within the TRON network. While the site asserts that it is noncustodial, suggesting users retain control over their assets, reports from users tell a starkly different story. There are accounts, including one on Reddit, of individuals losing significant funds—one user described losing 2,590 USDT after linking their Trust Wallet to the site and reporting the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Concerns and Warnings

JP’s investigation did not provide a line-by-line transaction report to substantiate the total claimed losses, but the consistency of accounts from victims raises serious concerns. Additionally, JP flagged another suspected scam site, tron.store, which has connections to phishing risks according to independent research. PhishDestroy, a security monitoring service, previously identified tron.store as a potential scam, indicating a pattern of malicious behavior tied to sites using similar naming conventions.

Warnings surrounding Tronify.rent predated the recent victim reports, with PhishDestroy classifying it as a critical threat with a rating of 90/100 back in February. The service noted that it had received multiple abuse reports regarding the site but lacked confirmation that the issues had been adequately addressed by the domain registrar. WHOIS records reveal that the domain was registered under a privacy-protection service, complicating efforts to trace it further.

Allegations of DDoS Protection

Compounding the situation is the claim by JP that Tronify.rent employed DDoS protection allegedly linked to Russia, although this assertion remains unverified in independent investigations.

Google’s AI and Financial Caution

Regarding the role of Google’s Gemini, it’s known that the platform warns users about the potential inaccuracies in AI-generated information, urging them to verify details from multiple sources. Google encourages users to approach AI-generated guidance with caution, especially concerning matters that may involve financial transactions or sensitive security issues. The company has previously issued alerts concerning scams utilizing AI to mislead users about cryptocurrency investments, indicating an ongoing risk associated with financial dealings that leverage artificial intelligence.

Conclusion

This incident marks a significant example of how scammers are increasingly using familiar technologies and reputable platforms to enhance the credibility of their fraudulent schemes. The alarming nexus of AI technology and crypto scams seems to be widening, warranting heightened vigilance among users in the cryptocurrency space.
