The Labour Party’s Accusation Against Nigel Farage

The Labour Party in the UK has formally accused Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, of avoiding necessary accountability regarding a large undisclosed financial gift he received. This donation, which amounts to approximately $6.7 million (£5 million), originated from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire investor in Tether, shortly before Farage’s decision to enter the race for the 2024 general election became public.

Call for Transparency

Labour chair, Turley, emphasized the need for transparency, stating:

“It’s time he ended his deafening silence and came clean with the public as to what’s gone on here.”

Harborne, who owns 12% of the stablecoin company Tether and ranks as the sixth wealthiest individual in the UK with an estimated net worth of $24.4 billion, presented Farage with this substantial sum in 2024. Following this, Farage successfully secured the Clacton seat in Essex during a July election and has since transformed Reform UK into one of the most financially-supported political parties in Britain. This surge in funding included an impressive £7 million in donations from both Harborne and Ben Delo, co-founder of BitMEX, in just the initial quarter of 2026.

Parliamentary Inquiry and Political Pressure

The situation intensified last month when the parliamentary standards commissioner launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Harborne’s financial gift, which was originally referred by the Conservative Party, raising concerns over whether it contributed to political campaigning. In a pointed exchange during the Prime Minister’s Questions, Keir Starmer pressed Farage on the lingering questions surrounding the £5 million, questioning:

“Why is the leader of Reform dodging inquiries about his donation and why did he keep it secret initially?”

This was in response to Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage‘s inquiry about potential government-imposed limits on political donations.

Contradictory Accounts from Farage

Farage has provided contrasting accounts regarding the purpose of the payment. He initially claimed in an interview with The Telegraph that the funds were meant to secure his personal safety, citing prior threats, including an arson attack on his residence. Later, he referred to it as a reward for his Brexit advocacy and insisted he had no obligation to disclose the gift.

Demands for Accountability

In her letter, Turley demanded a truthful account of the events, stating that it is unacceptable for Farage to avoid media inquiries. Notably, Harborne has contributed a total of $16 million (£12 million) to Reform UK over time, incorporating the record-breaking $12 million (£9 million) donation last year, marking the largest individual political donation from a living person in the UK’s history. This financial backing constitutes around two-thirds of Reform UK’s budget for 2025. In addition, Ben Delo also contributed to the party in early 2026, donating $5.3 million (£4 million) split across two transactions.

Government Measures and Future Implications

Although Starmer refrained from pledging a cap on large donations, he stated the government is committed to safeguarding democracy and combating foreign financial influence, referencing new measures such as a moratorium on cryptocurrency donations and restrictions on contributions from overseas, which Harborne believes were implemented with him in mind. Farage’s office and Harborne have yet to respond to requests for comments from Decrypt.
