Personnel Changes at the Ethereum Foundation
The Ethereum Foundation is experiencing a wave of personnel changes as two prominent researchers, Carl Beek and Julian Ma, have announced their departures from the organization this year.
Carl Beek’s Departure
Carl Beek, who has dedicated seven years to the Ethereum Foundation, made his exit known via a post on X, indicating his last day will be May 29. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to core Ethereum research and played a vital role in the development of the Beacon Chain, which facilitated Ethereum’s transition from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
In his farewell message, Beek expressed gratitude to fellow researchers, core developers, Foundation staff, and members of the Ethereum community, stating:
“To everybody involved, whether we collaborated closely or not: thank you.”
He emphasized that the ongoing strength of Ethereum lies in its community of builders.
Julian Ma’s Contributions
Similarly, Julian Ma, who has been with the Foundation for approximately four years, shared his exit on the same platform. His work primarily focused on mechanism design, cryptoeconomics, and enhancing the protocol’s scalability. Ma highlighted his contributions to innovations like FOCIL (EIP-7805) and the Fast Confirmation Rule, which notably decreased the time required to bridge transactions between Ethereum’s Layer 2 solutions and its mainnet to just 13 seconds.
Implications of Departures
With Beek’s contributions heavily intertwined with Ethereum’s pivotal shift to proof-of-stake, his decision to leave raises questions about the Foundation’s ability to maintain momentum amid key protocol updates and significant team transitions. While he did not disclose immediate plans post-departure, he revealed that he and his wife recently welcomed a child and that he intends to spend time with his family before considering his next steps.
Beek and Ma’s resignations follow a broader trend of recent exits from the Ethereum Foundation, coinciding with other notable figures like Barnabé Monnot, Tim Beiko, and Alex Stokes, who are also transitioning out or taking sabbaticals. This pattern reveals a shifting landscape within the Foundation, especially in its Protocol Cluster—a group at the forefront of key initiatives such as Glamsterdam, Hegotá, and various scaling upgrades.
The Foundation confirmed these organizational adjustments in an update earlier this month, detailing new leadership appointments for the Protocol Cluster, including Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik.
