MoneyGram Launches Visa Stablecoin Debit Card
In a bid to strengthen its presence in the blockchain payment space, MoneyGram has unveiled a new Visa stablecoin debit card. This initiative mirrors a recent move by its competitor, Western Union, which introduced a similar product just weeks prior.
Initial Launch and Future Plans
Initially, MoneyGram’s offering will launch as a virtual card in Colombia, compatible with popular mobile wallets such as Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The company indicated plans to roll out a physical version of the card as it enters new markets later in the year.
Collaboration and Technological Commitment
For its card operations, MoneyGram is collaborating with Rain, an infrastructure provider also working with Western Union on its newly announced Stablecard. This development represents MoneyGram’s ongoing commitment to leverage blockchain technology in international remittances, a strategy underscored by its June 2023 launch of the MGUSD stablecoin on the Stellar network. This stablecoin was integrated into MoneyGram’s app, which includes a self-custodial wallet feature.
Partnerships and Industry Trends
Furthermore, the company recently established a partnership with Solana, expanding its capabilities with cryptocurrency platforms. The significance of stablecoins in global remittance exchanges has been highlighted by recent studies from the World Bank, which noted that they could help lower the costs associated with sending money abroad.
Cost-Effectiveness of Debit Cards
According to its findings from September 2023, using debit cards for remittances is currently the most cost-effective method, incurring fees that average 3.61% of the total amount sent. Overall, MoneyGram and Western Union’s advancements reflect a broader trend towards integrating digital currencies in financial services, particularly in the remittance sector.
