Significant Disruption in Litecoin’s Blockchain
On Saturday, Litecoin experienced a significant disruption in its blockchain integrity following a sophisticated attack that took advantage of a zero-day vulnerability associated with its MimbleWimble Extension Block (MWEB) privacy layer. The Litecoin Foundation confirmed that this security flaw enabled legacy mining nodes to process an illegitimate MWEB transaction, prompting a chain fork characterized by a reorganization that unfolded over three hours before normal operations resumed.
Details of the Attack
The affected range included blocks 3,095,930 to 3,095,943, leading Aurora Labs’ CEO, Alex Shevchenko, to label the incident as a
“coordinated attack”
via a post on social media platform X. A total of 13 blocks were reversed, effectively erasing the erroneous transactions from Litecoin’s historical blockchain data. However, it is important to note that legitimate transactions that occurred during the upheaval were not compromised.
Exploitation Attempts and Financial Risks
During the brief fork period, the assailants attempted to exploit cross-chain swap protocols by executing double-spend operations against MWEB peg-outs, which became invalid post-reorganization. Shevchenko indicated that the potential risk for NEAR Intents was approximately $600,000, and he urged trading platforms to scrutinize Litecoin transactions and balances due to the emergence of multiple double-spend attempts.
Response and Resolution
In response to this incident, the Litecoin Foundation has confirmed that they have successfully resolved the zero-day vulnerability, although they have opted not to disclose which mining pools were impacted or the total amount of LTC involved in the unauthorized transactions.
Impact on Litecoin’s Market
This event represents the first significant compromise of MWEB since its introduction in May 2022, marking a critical moment in the operational history of Litecoin. Following the announcement of the exploit, Litecoin’s market price saw a minor dip, trading around $56, reflecting a decrease of approximately 1% for the day.
