Ripple's David Schwartz Uses Dark Humor to Address the $6 Billion Binance Hack
Former Ripple CTO David Schwartz uses dark humor to address the $6 billion Binance hack, linking it to Stellar (XLM) amid ongoing crypto rivalries.

The Cryptocurrency Sector Faces Unprecedented Theft
The cryptocurrency sector is facing an unprecedented theft, marking a troubling chapter in its history. In the wake of the Binance exchange hack, industry insiders are searching for humor amidst chaos, with former Ripple Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz leading the charge.
Humor Amidst Chaos
Schwartz, who was pivotal in the development of the XRP Ledger, took to social media to offer a sardonic take on the turmoil, particularly targeting his rival, the Stellar blockchain, founded by ex-Ripple co-founder Jed McCaleb.
His jest was sparked by a comment from Dom Kwok, co-founder of EasyA, who lamented the loss of his crypto assets except for Litecoin. Schwartz humorously replied,
“These sick b stards dropped an extra 517 XLM into my Binance account!”This quip not only provided a moment of levity amidst the severity of the hack but also underscored the ongoing rivalry between Ripple and Stellar.
The Seriousness of the Situation
Despite the comedic undertones, the seriousness of the situation cannot be overstated. The attack on Binance resulted in the immediate withdrawal of an astounding 233.46 million XRP tokens, valued at approximately $296 million, from the platform's hot wallets. The architectural design of the XRP Ledger makes it impossible to freeze these tokens at a protocol level.
Ripple's Response
Conversely, Ripple’s other asset, the Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin, was treated differently. The company’s Senior VP, Jack McDonald, revealed they successfully identified the illicit transactions involving the stolen RLUSD and rapidly acted to block the perpetrators’ addresses. Binance's co-founder Yi He publicly expressed gratitude to Ripple for their quick response, which prevented approximately $200 million in RLUSD from being misappropriated, ensuring that user funds remained secure through the platform's SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) initiative.
A Monumental Heist
The broader incident is part of a monumental heist involving $6.3 to $6.36 billion across ten different blockchain networks. So far, Binance and its collaborators have successfully frozen around $3 billion across multiple platforms. Investigations have indicated that the cybercriminal group TraderTraitor (also known as Lazarus) is likely behind this massive breach.
