Robinhood’s Cryptocurrency Trading Volume Surge

In August 2026, Robinhood reported a striking increase in its cryptocurrency trading volume, which surged by 61% from the previous month, amounting to $17.5 billion. Nevertheless, this figure still represented a significant decline of 38% compared to the same month in the prior year.

Breakdown of Trading Volume

A substantial portion of this volume, $10.1 billion, came from Bitstamp, the cryptocurrency exchange that Robinhood purchased in June 2025. Trading on the Robinhood app itself represented $7.4 billion of the overall volume for August.

Challenges in Trading Activities

Despite the month-over-month rise, Robinhood’s trading activities have also faced challenges. The trading numbers on the Robinhood platform plummeted by 46% year-on-year. Bitstamp’s transactions showed a 53% increase compared to July but saw a 30% decrease from the previous year. In contrast, the Robinhood app experienced a 72% boost in volume compared to July, although it too faced a 46% drop compared to August 2025.

Quarterly Performance Overview

In the preceding quarter, Bitstamp played a crucial role in Robinhood’s cryptocurrency trading landscape, contributing $22 billion to the total $40 billion volume, while the app accounted for $18 billion. However, the revenue generated from crypto transactions in the second quarter dipped by 38% year-on-year, falling to $100 million from $160 million the previous year.

Future Prospects

Still, robust growth in other areas such as options, equities, and event contracts allowed the company to achieve record revenue and earnings. Importantly, the latest report from Robinhood specified that data from the Robinhood Chain was not included in the reported figures. This addition represents another facet of their business strategy, with predictions suggesting it could bring in $160 million in annual fees by 2028 according to Bernstein.
